The Patti Hearsts were now left with the task of planning and hosting a “social media kickoff workshop” with all the clients flying back to New York City the following Monday. In a move that we would soon come to regret, Winston encouraged our new clients to “get out there” and start using Twitter for themselves, creating their own handles and experimenting with the service’s many features. For the first few minutes things had seemed okay, and our clients even seemed a little excited. “I just uploaded my profile picture!” exclaimed a baking soda toothpaste regional product manager from Fort Lauderdale. “I tweeted at someone!” an associate retail director announced gleefully, having not actually truly tweeted at anyone because “@my friends” was not technically a supported concept. With studious faces, grownups in khakis and no-iron shirts followed a comedian or two that Twitter suggested, such as Carrot Top, along with several news organizations and TED Talk–anointed scientists for good measure. We were, in the words of one of our clients, “Twittering,” and everyone was pretty happy. For a moment.
